Short answer
Remove or control the instrument, establish the direction and size of error, identify readings and product decisions since the last reliable check, assess affected product using competent technical judgement, record disposition and verify repair or replacement before return to use.
What this means in practice
A probe used for chilled-product release reads warmer than a reference during routine verification. Recent recorded temperatures were within limit, but the direction of error may mean actual product was colder than shown. The technical manager must assess the evidence rather than automatically holding everything or assuming no impact.
First prevent further reliance on uncertain readings by identifying the device and controlling its use. Then preserve the failed result, reference used and conditions of the check. A simple 'failed calibration' label does not show how the error affects earlier measurements.
Scope should follow use history. Review assignment records, batches, time windows and decision limits, then consider whether the direction and magnitude of error could have changed an acceptance decision. This is a competent technical assessment, not an automatic conclusion based only on pass or fail status.
Separate equipment correction from product assessment. Repairing or replacing the device restores future capability; it does not resolve the status of product previously accepted with it. Each route needs its own owner, evidence and authorised conclusion.
